President Donald Trump needed some assistance from his wife when asked about Les Misérables.

Donald and Melania Trump walked alongside one another at the Kennedy Center to watch the Broadway show. Melania was stunned while wearing a black dress with her hair styled down and smiled for the cameras, while Donald wore his best black and white tux for the event.

When walking the red carpet, Donald was getting bombarded with questions about current events and the show. One reporter asked if Donald “identified more with Jean Valjean (the protagonist) or Javert (a police inspector who relentlessly pursues him)?”

He responded: “That’s a tough one. That last part of that question.” While holding Melania’s hand, the president looks at her and says: “You better answer that one honey. I don’t know.”

A clip quickly surfaced from the event with fans mocking the president and claiming it was clear that “he had no idea”.

One person on X, formerly known as Twitter, wrote: “He doesn’t know the play, he doesn’t know the history. It’s the only way he could get a night out with Melania, to bring a little New York Broadway. Seriously, this is even nuttier than normal nutty.” Another person wrote: “I’ll bet my house he doesn’t know who both are.”

A third person posted: “Just like ‘name your favorite Bible verse, Mr. Trump.’ Umm… it’s tough, I wouldn’t wanna get into it.” A fourth wrote: He’s never read the story nor seen the play & has no idea who they’re asking him about [three laughing face emojis]. This reminds me of when they asked him what his favorite Bible verse was at CPAC, a few years ago. He gave the same answer & followed up with how he loves it all and couldn’t choose.”

That same reporter also asked the president if he had seen the musical before. He answered: “We have seen it a number of times. It’s fantastic.”

Les Misérables is a show about citizens rising up against their government. Donald’s attendance comes days after he sent U.S. Marines and the National Guard to stop protests against his administration’s immigration raids in Los Angeles.

On June 6, 2025, protests (including riots) erupted in the city of Los Angeles after the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raided several cities to arrest people allegedly involved in illegal immigration.
